On June 12, 2024, ‘Insight’ signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations’ International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM).
The aim of this Memorandum is to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under International Law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011.
The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism for Syria (IIIM)
- The Mechanism was established by the United Nations General Assembly and is a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly and is thus an integral part of the United Nations.
- The Mechanism assists in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under International Law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011.
- The Mechanism does not have prosecutorial powers but assists judicial authorities that respect human rights and do not implement the death penalty.
- The Mechanism is mandated to collect, consolidate, preserve and analyse evidence of violations of international law and to prepare files in order to facilitate and expedite fair and independent criminal proceedings.
- from 2018 to 2024, the IIIM contributed to several cases investigated by the International Court of Justice and judicial authorities in France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Insight Organization
- An independent, non-profit organization dedicated to monitoring and documenting human rights violations in Syria.
- Relies on a network of correspondents and field investigators to help uncover human rights violations in Syria.
- Collects and records information accurately in dedicated databases, which are analysed and presented in periodic and thematic reports.
- Aims to shed light on committed violations, advocate for them, and call for actions to stop them and achieve justice.
The purpose of this Memorandum is to provide information and evidence related to violations, victims’ complaints, and witness testimonies to contribute to fair and independent judicial proceedings.
